Job Description 

Sunday School Teacher/Classroom Assistant

The Sunday School Teacher and/or Classroom Assistant reports to the Minister and is supervised by the Lifelong Faith Exploration Director (DLFE). Regular hours for the position are every Sunday 10:15am – 11:45 am, September – June. Up to two additional hours per week are allotted for Sunday School Teacher lesson planning time and are flexible, depending on collaboration with the DLFE. Summer hours are variable and negotiable.

The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Wilmington (UUCW-NC) welcomes and supports families with children. We have a rich tradition of providing developmentally appropriate religious education to children and youth in our Sunday school. Our liberal faith calls for a wide variety of instructional materials and content as we learn the lessons of the world’s religions. We help children find meaning in the world while encouraging them to align their moral compass with Unitarian Universalism’s Seven Principles. One need not be a Unitarian Universalist, but one must be willing to support our values and capable of nurturing them in children:

Tasks

  • Perform required tasks for the intake process for each child as they arrive, including   them in, obtaining parent/guardian information, and educating families to classroom policies.
  • Interact with parents/guardians with professionalism to foster confidence in the care their child receives.
  • Supervise children to ensure the safety of themselves and others. Handle disruptive behavior according to UUCWNC policy.
  • Take direction from volunteer class leader (teacher) for conducting lesson plans. This may include preparation of craft supplies, reading a story, internet/media presentations, etc. Assist with clean up of classroom and dismissal of students.
  • Proactively engage the children in lessons and related activities.
  • Monitor bathroom breaks.
  • Follow all UUCWNC policies and processes for maintaining a clean, safe environment.
  • Follow all UUCWNC policies regarding the care of children, including disciplinary measures and release of children to their parent/guardian.

The Classroom Assistant will take direction from a volunteer or paid staff Sunday School Teacher for conducting lesson plans on Sunday mornings. This may include preparation of craft supplies, reading a story, internet/media presentations, etc. Assist with clean up of classroom and dismissal of students.

The Sunday School Teacher will use pre-selected, published curriculum to create and implement lesson plans on Sunday mornings. The DLFE will provide guidance as needed, as well as any required supplies and resources.

Skills

  • Experience with caring for children in private or public setting; general knowledge of child development stages.
  • Oral communication skills through demonstrated ability to effectively interact with young children and their parent/guardians.
  • Ability to multi-task in a demanding environment.
  • Ability to be an effective team member, building cohesion with co-workers while adjusting to changing situations.

Required

  • Reliable and punctual.
  • Flexibility in meeting the needs of the children and parents/guardian.
  • Clean background check.
  • CPR/First Aid Certification is a +.
  • MMR vaccinations and complete covid 19 vaccinations are required.
  • Face masks will be required until further notice.

Application for Teaching Assistant Position

The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Wilmington (UUCW NC) welcomes and supports children, their caregivers, and their families. Our SEEKers classroom provides a Unitarian Universalist religious education to youth ages 5-8 each Sunday morning. The Teaching Assistant is a paid position that supports a volunteer Lead Teacher from our congregation or the Director of Religious Education. The Teaching Assistant will be expected to work from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm each Sunday and will occasionally be asked to support “One Room Schoolhouse” (ages 5+) religious education classes or the Nursery (infant - 4 years old). Additionally, opportunities to provide childcare for youth from infancy through 12 years of age may be available for programs and special events. A background check is required.
